Hi Suhas,
Following are the details which may help you.
[ SUBJECT: Public Administration (PA) ]
=> PRELIMS (120q / 120minutes)
1. Public Administration - Laxmikanth
2. Public Administration - Fadia & Fadia
3. Organization Behaviour - Robbins
4. Administrative Thinkers - Prasad & Prasad
5. Indian Polity - Laxmikanth (Constitution explained in this)
6. Indian Administration - Fadia & Fadia
7. Local Government - Maheshwari
8. India Year Book - Govt Publication of that year - Chapters on Indian Polity (Ministries, Dept, thier field of area, Committees etc), Defence, Education, Finance, States & anything related PA.
9. Yojana
10. Current Affairs on Indian Polity, Local Govt, Committees, Policies etc from leading newspapers & a good magazine like Chronicle or wizard or Pratiyogita Darpan
Solve the previous year question papers given at the end of the book.1. if you take PA for prelims.
You may think the list of books are long but I assure you that atleast 110/120 q's will come from these.
Remember key to success is revising the studied things atleast 10 times.
Why 10 times?
B'cos in PA you have to remeber around 300 statements by scholars & the related fields from which around 4-5 q's appear. Many feel (including me) that its hard to do that (for me it was illogical as we science students dont mug up things but derive them with basics). Best is not to lose interest by looking at them which may result in losing an attempt (I did & many others). Road on success path is continued study & revision.
Note: I have not studied 4 & 5 for prelims. I got them now to study for mains and found few direct q's asked from them. I have cleared 2 prelims without them but I strongly suggest you to go through them as it is necessary for mains.

Geography is my mains optional hence I can tell you more from mains perspectives. With regards to prelims i know very few things which my friends used to say must.
=>PRELIMS (120q / 120minutes)
1. Ensemble (Preliminary) - Volume I - By Siddartha. ---> You may not find this in bookstores in Bang. So Check for Ensemble coaching Institute ad in Chronicle magazine and order it.
2. Geography through Maps - by siddartha ---> must for both prelims & mains (map questions)
3. A standard atlas (Oxford or Orient longmann) --> study this with chapters u read from mains books - helps in main also (map Q's)
4. Previous year solved question bank(chapterwise) --> this would help in revision & also many q's repeat.

Magazines & NewsPapers
---------------------------
1. Kurukshetra

3. Chronicle
4. Any English national daily
5. Economic Times
Others
-------
1. Current updates on Govt. Policies, Map entries from news papers (fetches almost 120 marks), Economy (both world & India - part of GS), International relations
Note: In a map entry - 1 mark for map location & 5 mark for description <> PRELIMS (150 q / 120minutes)
I divided GS for prelims into 2 parts - Traditional parts & current Affairs
Traditional
---------------
1. NCERT books - 10,11,12 standard - on Social Science(Histroy, Geography, Polity, Civics), Science subjects.
Instead of studying them you can buy General Studies by IES MADE EASY academy, Delhi. They have extracted all objective type of knowledge from the NCERT books and brought out a book. It costs around Rs.380. I think it is not available in Bengaluru. Get it from Delhi.
2. History -> Spectrum's A brief History of Modern India
3. Polity -> Indian Polity - Laxmikanth
4. Mental Ability -> more stress on probabilty - solve previous years q's, RSAgarwal Quantitative Aptitude, Not a problem for science or engineering students. While attempting paper keep these q's at the end as sometimes a single q may take morethan 5 minutes which is like shooting your leg by yourself.
5. India Year Book - Govt Publication - around 50-60 q's of that year
6. Economic Survey & Budget of that year
Current Affairs
---------------------
5. Current Affairs -> Good daily Newspaper/s, magazines (mentioned above), Spectrum's or Wizard or IES MADE EASY's Current Affairs which is released a month before the exam.
Note:
1. I didnot spend even a single minute on science as the number of questions from them were very generic and of current affairs nature. It saved me lot of time which I spent on revising other topics.

4. Statistics - Spectrum's & previous year q's
must
-------
1. 2-marker books coming to market during that time. Select the best.
2. "Jawahar's GS (Mains) solved papers" - will help you to understand answer writing and some q's may reappear!!!
Attending Test series will help you to evaluate your course and helps in preparing in the right direction.
I hope this will help you.
Talk to other guys who are attending classes in training institutes in Delhi & Bangalore (Vijaya Nagar Area) to know more on Prelims related materials.
My suggestion is finish mains syllabus which covers almopst 60-70 per cent of prelims syllabus & then look for other materials to finish off.
The above information is out of my self experience (almost 2 years of study) & I have not yet cleared mains(taking 2 attempt in 2009). You can consult others who may guide you with additional/modified inputs. I wish you success.
Regards,
Som
